Greens comment on Birmingham Airport runway decision

Commenting on Solihull Council’s Planning Sub-Committee to permit extension of Birmingham Airport’s runway, Felicity Norman, Green Party Prospective Euro-MP said

“This is a disastrous decision. The nine Councillors have bowed to commercial pressure, not looking after the interests of the people they are supposed to represent.

“Extending the runway is going to have a catastrophic and inexcusable impact on climate change, which in itself will have a negative impact on the world economy in the long term.

“The runway extension itself may even make a second runway at Birmingham more, not less likely in the long term.

“The news to be cheerful about is that Councillors did say they want to look more closely at the planning conditions (Section 106 Agreement), which means we have a chance to tighten up the conditions on which grounds planning permission is granted. I hope to see a greater commitment for action on climate change, noise, fewer night flights and a higher target for the proportion of passengers arriving by public transport”.
