Greens Euro campaign kicks off in High Peak

imageDerbyshire Green Party members from the High Peak area were out leafleting in Glossop, New Mills and Buxton on Saturday.

Shoppers were given leaflets in support of Kat Boettge’s campaign to be elected to the European Parliament in May. With elections to the European Parliament being held under a fair voting system of proportional representation local Greens are hopeful that Kat will become the first ever Green MEP for the East Midlands Region.

Local organiser Peter Allen said: “The debate about Europe has so far been dominated by UKIP, a party which is attracting support in a climate of general hostility to the establishment political parties and politicians, by pushing a message of fear - fear of immigrants in particular. Their argument is that the UK has to shut its doors to foreigners and foreign influence, and that its future lies in ‘ going it alone’. In doing so, it deliberately fails to recognise the positive impact that immigration has had on our history and culture. It also fails to identify the main reason for the cause of the broken economy and divided society which many of us experience in our daily lives. They have no answer to the gross irresponsibility and naked greed of the tiny minority of rich individuals and large corporations, who own most of the wealth and have most of the power in the UK and across Europe”

In contrast to the UKIP message of fear, and to the failed and discredited policies of the “grey parties” (Conservative, Lib Dem and Labour), the Green Party offers a message of hope for the future, campaigning for a reformed European Community, a greener and more sustainable economy and a fairer, more equal society.

Polling day for the European Election will be on 22nd May.

The Gagging Bill

DemocracyWe are sliding into a dictatorship. The new aristocrats of wealth are staging a coup by stealth, controlling what Government does, determining who makes up Government, influencing the political agenda and ensuring that all legislation conforms to their interests. They are ensuring that the public are unaware of the Government’s programme until it is too late, and are distracting public populist distractions away from policies that will have a huge impact on their lives. I do not claim this idea as original; I have taken it from Professor Robert Reich of the University of California, who said:

‘I fear that at least since 2010 we’ve been witnessing a quiet, slow-motion coup d’état whose purpose is to repeal every bit of progressive legislation since the New Deal and entrench the privileged positions of the wealthy and powerful - who haven’t been as wealthy or as powerful since the Gilded Age of the late 19th century.’

Alarmist, and relevant only to America?

Remember…

  • · ‘It’s the Sun Wot Won It!’ The American owned News International claiming credit for the Tories 1992 unexpected election victory. Murdoch again endorsing Blair, and hey – he wins!
  • · The economic strategy of Austerity that suits the financial institutions but was not included in the Tories election manifesto.
  • · The singular lack of effort to regulate the financial sector that is such a big donor to Tory coffers.
  • · Corporate lobbyists steering energy policy away from renewables towards fossil fuels at a time when 97% of people who know what they are talking about on climate change are screaming, ‘cut carbon emissions’!
  • · Tories in Europe blocking regulations on fracking and blocking moves to implement a Financial Transaction Tax.

And so the list goes on. We are seeing members of Parliament acting against the interests of their electors, secure because they know that the corporate press will support their re-election.

In the face of disquiet about the influence of lobbyists, the Government felt compelled to bring in a Lobbying Bill, but with a twist straight out of 1984 - they managed to exclude the activities of the powerful corporate lobbyists and focus instead on charities and small campaigning groups. They have turned the Lobbying Bill in to a Gagging Bill. The Corporation who are running the show are unaffected and it is the small citizens groups who are trying to bring their concerns to the political agenda who will be effectively silenced in an election year.

So we now find that if the ‘Gagging’ Bill is passed into law, the ability of groups such as the Women’s Institute, Frack Off and campaigns against Austerity will be severely limited in their ability to bring their concerns and policy preferences to the attention of the public in an election. The corporate run big party election machine will have a clear run to push the official line. All the electors will hear is ‘Britain’s on the mend’ and ‘the medicine’s working’. Nothing about destitution, hunger, under-employment, full time jobs for less than a living wage, obscene banker’s bonuses, the rich getting richer, the poor poorer. Those who might have the true facts on the state of British society will have been silenced.

And this is not all. Hidden away in the sub-clauses of an Antisocial Behaviour Crime and Policing Bill are proposals to stop protest. A middle ranking police officer will have the power to ban any protest if it is deemed to risk causing a disturbance. Any Council will have similar rights if any group of electors raises opposition to a demonstration.

This Bill is proposing a nebalcombe-frackingw power called the Injunctions to Prevent Nuisance and Annoyance. Unfortunately it can’t be applied to politicians on Newsnight, but it can apply to just about anyone else away from their home. So a landowner could apply it to ramblers on a foot path; the owners of a drilling site could apply it to people walking slowly along an access road; the organisers of a hunt could apply it to anyone holding a critical placard. A person speaking in a public place can be silenced least she or he annoy anyone.

There is no definition of ‘Nuisance or Annoyance’; it is the opinion of a Council or a senior police officer who seeks the injunction. Once granted the injunction can be enforced by any ‘officer in uniform’. There needs to be no clear intent, only the officer’s opinion that there is a risk of undefined ‘antisocial behaviour’. The Officer will have dispersal and exclusion powers and the power to remove any person they ‘suspect’ to be under 16. Failure to abide by the instructions of the Officer is an arrestable offence that could lead to imprisonment.

This is an attack on our fundamental right of free assembly and free speech. This Bill has been sternly opposed by campaigning groups, the churches, political groups and legal opinion. Lord Macdonald of River Glaven, acting on behalf of the Christian Institute said

‘It is easily foreseeable that these powers may be invoked by the police in situations where their use impacts bluntly upon the exercise of rights to free expression and free assembly, as well as other core right.’

In his Opinion he cited the following statement from the European Court of Justice referring to the European Convention of Human Rights.

‘Freedom of expression constitutes one of the essential foundations of (democratic) society, one of the basic conditions for its progress and for the development of every man. Tolerance, of low-level non-criminal behaviour that may be capable of causing some person annoyance or nuisance, is an important feature of an open and democratic society governed by the rule of law.’

We may also note here that the Conservative Party wishes to withdraw the UK from the European Convention, in the light of this Bill, we can see why.

The financial sector is probably the richest economic sector in the world, it’s turnover is truly eye-watering, figures that we can hardly comprehend. This sector operates in our midst, consuming goods and services provided by society and the natural environment. It seems reasonable to me that the sector should make a fair payment to help to cover the cost of these services and to contribute to the proper functioning of society.

This is the position of the European Union. Supported by public opinion across Europe, a majority of member states want the financial sector to make a fair and proportional contribution to public finances. This after all is what we are required to do as is any other sector of the economy. In addition a majority of ordinary tax payers think that the financial sector should be paying back what they have received form the European tax payer as the…

Open Letter Against Fracking

Subject: Unconventional fossil fuels / Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Directive & other projects from the European Institutions

kat-gp-1

Kat Boettge - Candidate for the European Elections

The Green Party is the only party opposing Fracking. As some of you may know the European Commission is to announce non-binding guidance for the shale gas industry this Wednesday 23rd January, 2014. This is very bad news for our campaign against fracking.

In protest over the Commission’s stance and the lack of leadership on this issue from the EU in general, East Midlands Green Party and Derbyshire Green Party have signed an Open Letter along with some 290 civil society groups and NGOs who have outlined their concerns in a joint open letter to the EU institutions.

The letter states that many groups of concerned citizens and environmental organizations are against the development in Europe of unconventional fossil fuels (UFFs) and are concerned about the multiple and unavoidable impacts on the environment, on climate, on people’s health and on a number of fundamental freedoms and human rights.

It goes on to state the main reasons why we oppose this industry; one of which is that the extraction of these hydrocarbons will worsen our GHG footprint and will divert or even jeopardize European energy and climate objectives.

Instead of moving away from fossil fuel energy sources, developing more sources of renewable energy, and improving energy efficiency policies, this industry would lock us into another dirty fossil fuel cycle. You can find the full version of the letter here.

You can hear more of our concerns on The Sunday Politics show http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=esjNP_Acwi4&feature=youtube_gdata

Breathless - our right to breathe

Successive government policies are failing in safeguarding the rights of many to breathe. Fracking plans are part of a long line of health threats being created. The Green Party is different.

3 people a day die of asthma in the UK, 200 a day are rushed to emergency care. Although triggers are diverse, some of these deaths are warning signals that the air we breathe is not safe. Exhaust fumes, for example, can trigger an attack that leaves the airways inflamed, constricted, obstructed, twisted. Air pollutants, harsh chemicals in the home or work place and stress are some of the triggers, as are extremes of temperature. Areas of the world where fracking is underway show rising asthma and other health crisis. Texas, where drilling is heavy has a 25% asthma rate in young children compared to national average…

Now it’s Fracking Bribery

Originally posted on East Midlands Green Party Blog:

The cynicism of the Con Dem government is staggering. It has deliberately driven Councils and Communities to desperation by cutting their budgets, and now it is bribing those same struggling Authorities to give permission for fracking that local communities have clearly rejected. If they do as the Government demands, turn a blind eye to the hazards, and the opinion of the electorate, they will be rewarded with extra cash from the fracking companies. Like some medieval torturer who, having starved his victim allows the smell of a succulent meal to drift into the torture chamber, so the Government waves the promise of cash at these desperate Councils. Inevitably this action will weaken further the trust between Councils and their electorate, as the Tories intend – residents will never be sure if a permission was given in the best interest of the community and country, or for the cash.

‘Bribe’ anger as PM backs fracking

Originally posted on Northants Green Party's Blog:

ImageThe Government has renewed its push to promote controversial “fracking” for shale gas, as French energy giant Total confirmed it was investing in the industry in the UK.

Prime Minister David Cameron announced that local authorities in England would receive 100% of the business rates collected from shale gas schemes, rather than the usual 50%.

It is the latest move by the Government to promote the exploitation of unconventional gas in the UK, which the Prime Minister claimed could bring the UK 74,000 jobs, more than £3 billion of investment and cheaper and more secure energy.

But environmentalists criticised the business rates incentive as a “bribe” to reluctant local authorities.

And they warned that it raised serious concerns over conflicts of interest if the councils benefiting from the money were the ones deciding on planning applications.

Opponents fear fracking, a process in which liquid is pumped deep underground at high…

Built on Poverty and Hunger

A piece by Mike Shipley reflecting on the real cost of Factory Farming

Factory Farms are built on the foundations of Poverty and Hunger.

Foston is back in the news this week. The Soil Association has written to Midland Pig Producers, the company behind the proposed 25,000 pig unit, asking them to withdraw their planning application. A final decision on this protracted process is expected this month, although the County Council seems to be content to sit on the application saying that they are waiting for the Environment Agency to decide on an operating permit before giving a decision.

In the letter, Soil Association Director, Peter Melchett cites the overwhelming opposition to the project from local people, with 20,000 objections, and the on-going uncertainty that is affecting the lives of local residents. Melchett also reiterates the health concerns associated with these industrial scale animal units, saying that the evidence is…

Derbyshire Greens Solidarity with Barton Moss anti-fracking Campaign

Green Euro Candidate Peter Allen

Members of Derbyshire Green Party visited the anti fracking protest camp at Barton Moss near Irlam, Salford, on Saturday January 4th. They were welcomed by a diverse bunch of campers, male and female, old and young, who remained in high spirits despite the atrocious weather and the heavy handed policing, which has seen as many as 30 arrests for peaceful protests in the last few weeks.

Charlotte&Peter Barton Moss Jan14

Ian, Charlotte, Anne and Peter

Green Party members from Manchester and from the South of England were also visiting and the Green Party was given credit for being the only parliamentary party in England which has stated its unqualified opposition to fracking.

” MPs from other parties, including MPs from round here, have been given permission by party leaders to oppose fracking in their own area whilst being required to support it in principle. It is the worst form of cynicism, designed to get them through the next election” said anti fracking activist Ian, who has had a long and successful career in the oil industry and knows the dangers in, and damage caused by fracking as well as anyone.

Ian is in no doubt that the plan is to carry out fracking and not just examine the potential for extracting methane gas from the coal deposits. The evidence for this is the fact that drilling is taking place far below the coal deposits, into the shale rock below.

Barton Moss pic Jan14

The campers regard the protest as absolutely vital to the success of the campaign to stop fracking. Regular early morning “slow walk” protests from the main road up to the site delay and inconvenience the work being carried out by IGas. The Green Party fully supports the protests believing that fracking must be “fought on all fronts” if a military analogy is acceptable. It recognises that there is a need for a “strategic battle” using all appropriate strategies, from speaking in Parliament as Green MP Caroline Lucas has done, raising the issue in forthcoming local and European elections, as Green Party candidates will do, and supporting the direct action at Barton Moss.

The Next Event Sunday 12th January, 12.30pm

Assemble in the lay-by at M30 7RL (the junction of A57 Liverpool Road and Barton Moss Road) to march together to the camp. Some may be walking up Liverpool Road from the Salford City Reds ground and meeting up at Barton Moss Road. A New Year message from Katharina Boettge, lead European candidate for the Green Party in the East Midlands

kat-gp-1I wanted to use this opportunity to wish you all a Happy New Year, and to thank you for all your support, hard work and donations.

In 2013 we were heavily involved in preparing for the upcoming Euro Election in May of this year. We have achieved a lot including setting up a media structure, engaging further with the social media, community websites and groups.

We have planned a promising campaign strategy that hopefully will get us to Brussels. Recent polls have been encouraging. Nationally the Greens are on 7% and support for the other parties is starting to fade. The public mood is very volatile and very many are looking for something new, something honest, something that addresses their needs.

We do believe that if we can get our message of hope and honesty out to enough people across our region, we can be successful. Remember, this election uses a proportional voting system, not first past the post. This gives us a real chance, but to take that chance, we will need all the help that we can get.

If you are interested in joining us in changing current politics in 2014, please contact us or just come to our next meetings. There are so many ways in which you can help, depending on your interests, experiences, time availability and skills. I am sure that we can find a suitable and exciting role or task for you. I look forward to meeting you soon.
