Derbyshire Green Party Press Release: 28th August 2020.

Derbyshire Badger Cull

Recent reports suggesting that Derbyshire will be included in a new badger cull
programme are alarming.

The Derbyshire Green Party fully supports the ongoing campaign by Derbyshire
Wildlife Trust to stop a new badger cull from happening. A lot of work has been put
in over recent years to vaccinate many badgers across Derbyshire as part of
the biggest vaccination programme in the UK.

The Wildlife Trust’s studies suggest that any cull would not be justified, as there is no
evidence of widespread TB amongst the badger population within the county. It
would potentially result in vaccinated badgers being shot, causing disruption to the
largest and most established Government funded vaccination programme in the
country.

In March 2020, following an independent review in 2018, Defra announced that they
were planning to gradually phase out the culling of badgers and replace it with
vaccinations
across the country.

Derbyshire Green Party Co-ordinator Darren Yates said – “While the culling of
badgers anywhere in the country is to be opposed, it would be particularly galling in
Derbyshire, given all the good work in recent years to establish a vaccination
programme. I would urge all our MPs and Councillors to do all they can to stop this
cull from being introduced in Derbyshire and for the people of Derbyshire to support
the campaign currently being run by Derbyshire Wildlife Trust”
.
